Collingswood Roots & Shoots Nature Club

The mission of the Collingswood Roots & Shoots Nature Club is to encourage and develop environmental awareness and interest in the natural sciences among area children. The nature club is open to grades 3-8, and environmentally-minded high school students are welcome to participate as “Eco-Mentors”. Children in grades K-2 may attend with parents/guardians.

Through child-driven community service projects, nature study classes, park exploration, science experiments, nature crafts, and gardening, we hope to inspire and engage young people to learn about and care for the world around them. We are a member of Jane Goodall’s international Roots & Shoots program, an international movement to encourage environmental awareness among children.

Ages and Cost

The club is open to 3rd–8th graders for independent attendance. Children in grades K-2 may attend with parents. All students must be registered to attend. The cost is $10 per child, per season. High school students may e-mail for information about volunteering.

Activites and Structure

Some of the club’s activities include birding, park & lake clean-ups, stream & pond surveys, insect study & bug hunts, science experiments, eco-crafts, and other topics of interest to club members. A curriculum of 5-7 classes is established per season. Collingswood Roots & Shoots meets in the spring and fall, just like many of our sports teams do. Children are grouped into “Eco-Teams” which are led by an adult “Eco-Leader”. Groups meet one time per week for one hour to explore one of Collingswood’s parks. Information for this season’s of classes appears below.
